Clear aligners vs braces: which is right for you?
Clear aligners are usually the better choice for adults and teens with mild to moderate crowding or spacing who want a discreet, removable option, while traditional braces still handle the most complex bite and rotation cases. Both straighten teeth effectively, the right choice depends on your case, your lifestyle, and your budget. At Hamilton Care Dental Centre we offer SureSmile® clear aligners and can tell you at a consultation which option will give you the best result.
How do clear aligners work?
Clear aligners are a series of custom, nearly invisible plastic trays that gently move your teeth a fraction of a millimetre at a time. You wear each set for one to two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat and brush. The trays are designed with the same 3D scanning and printing technology we cover in our article on modern dental technology, which lets us preview your final smile before you even start.
What can clear aligners fix, and what can't they?
Clear aligners reliably correct crowding, gaps, mild relapse after old braces, and many bite issues. Very severe rotations, large bite discrepancies, or teeth that need significant vertical movement are sometimes better treated with braces. The American Dental Association recommends an in-person assessment because only an exam and X-rays can confirm whether your case is suitable for aligners.
How much do clear aligners cost in Hamilton?
Clear aligner treatment in Hamilton generally ranges from about $3,500 to $6,500 depending on how complex your case is and how many trays you need, which is comparable to traditional braces. We provide a clear written estimate after your consultation, and you can use 0% financing to spread the cost into monthly payments. Some plans and the Canadian Dental Care Plan may contribute toward orthodontic care for eligible patients.
How long does aligner treatment take?
Most aligner cases finish in six to eighteen months, with simple cases sometimes completing in as little as four to six months. Braces typically take eighteen to twenty-four months. Wearing your aligners the full 20 to 22 hours a day is the single biggest factor in finishing on time, because the trays only work while they are in your mouth.
Are clear aligners more comfortable than braces?
Most patients find aligners more comfortable because there are no metal brackets or wires to irritate the cheeks and lips. You can remove them to eat anything you like and to brush and floss normally, which also makes them easier to keep clean. The trade-off is discipline, they only work if you actually wear them, while braces are fixed and always working.
Keeping your new smile: retainers
Whichever option you choose, teeth naturally try to drift back, so you will wear a retainer afterward, usually nightly, to lock in your result. Straightening is also a great time to consider whitening or minor cosmetic dentistry touch-ups for a complete smile makeover, as we explain in our overview of cosmetic dentistry in Hamilton.
